Supporting Local CHARITIES

The Wye Valley Brewery ‘Pledge’

There’s no denying we’re a passionate bunch and fiercely proud of everything we do. Everyone who works for Wye Valley Brewery is committed to making the best beers possible, but also to helping others… Local charities, not-for-profit organisations, outreach programmes, schools, clubs and community groups.

As a thriving business, we recognise all the support we’ve had over the years and know we wouldn’t have got where we are today without everybody around us. So it’s only right that we give back, and is what the Wye Valley Brewery Pledge is all about – from providing prizes for raffles and auctions, to sponsoring events and supporting via social media.

Ultimately, it’s all about raising a glass to the community and championing local causes in the same way Wye Valley Brewery champions the ‘Great British pub’ - the original social hub!

Our Story

  1. Where the Story Begins

Brewing is in the blood… As a family-run brewery we’re passionate about what we do; the people we work with and, of course, the people who share our love of good beer! Wye Valley Brewery was started by former Guinness brewer, Peter Amor, who had a dream to brew the best cask-conditioned beer. It all began in the summer of 1985! After brewing for years for Guinness, Peter Amor decided to branch out on his own. He began brewing from the back of a pub in Canon Pyon in Herefordshire but soon moved to the old stable block of The Barrels (formerly The Lamb Hotel) in Hereford - Wye Valley Brewery’s very first pub!

  2. Award winner in the SIBA Wales & West competition

Silver Award received for our HPA.

  3. Keeping it in the Family

After studying at Young’s brewery in London, Peter’s son, Vernon Amor, joined the brewery to help with the demands of the growing business.

  4. The Big Move

By 2002, the brewery had well and truly outgrown its stable block at The Barrels and Peter and Vernon were on the look-out for bigger premises. Fortunately, a 9-acre former cider mill in Stoke Lacy was soon to become Wye Valley Brewery’s new home.

  6. Bottling it up

Installing a bottling line was another huge step for the brewery and definitely one worth celebrating… Following an official opening that was attended by local dignitaries and dedicated Wye Valley Brewery fans, with the bottling line in full swing, the brewery was for the first time able to brew and bottle under one roof.

  7. Going Green

In October 2013, work on a brand new Brewhouse was completed. As well as increasing brewing capacity, the state-of-the-art Brewhouse also increased energy efficiency.

  8. Solar, So Good!

To add to our already impressive array of solar panels, in November 2015 a bank of panels were installed in one of the fields to the rear of the brewery. These new solar panels are currently producing over 41% of the brewery’s total electricity! Find out more about Wye Valley Brewery’s commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and our ongoing eco-initiatives.

Mean, green Brewing Machine

Very few other breweries can match us when it comes to sustainability. Here, being green isn’t just about ticking boxes; it’s part and parcel of our commitment to brewing beautiful beers, caring for our local community and looking after the land so that it remains beautiful for generations to come.

  • INVESTMENT IN INNOVATION

Installation of an innovative ‘thermal fluid’ wort-boiling system that could be located next to the copper - a world first for the application of this system in the brewing industry. The new system is also very quick to start-up and close-down, so can be turned off in-between brews.

  • LOCALISED HEATING

Moving from a centralized steam boiler to smaller individual heaters that could be locally installed near to the cask-washing, wort-boiling and bottling areas of the Brewhouse.

  • COOKING ON GAS

Switching from oil to gas meant that we now produce fewer emissions and ensures we have a more energy efficient system.

  • INGENIOUS USE OF WATER

Water vapour created during the brewhouse boil is recovered and used to heat water to clean our casks… So, put simply, our empty casks get a nice hot wash with water that would have otherwise disappeared into the atmosphere! Clever, hey?

  • RENEWABLE ENERGY

Roof and ground-mounted solar panels covering the equivalent of more than six tennis courts, providing over 41% of the brewery’s total electricity.

  • THE FARMING COMMUNITY

Spent grain and hops are shared with local farmers to use for animal feed and compost; while excess yeast is offered to our farming neighbours for pig feed!

  • KEEPING THINGS LOCAL

Over 80% of all our hops are from local farms and we deliver the vast majority of our beers within a 70 mile radius, helping keep our carbon footprint as low as possible.

  • CASK AGAIN

Approximately 90% of our beer is sold in casks or kegs, which are recycled over and over again. In fact, we are still using some of our original casks from when we first started in 1985!
